Lekha School of Creative Writing holds Summer Camps throughout the Bay Area. Our camps are full day or half day. However, be advised, half day camp spots are limited. In our camps, students will get time to play, eat snacks, and talk with their friends. Although we are an academic camp, we encourage our students to explore their creativity and the possiblities of writing.
Our camp consists of two writing paths - creative and critical. Both the creative writing and the critical or academic programs are based on the Lekha way, developing a student's creative work (story, poetry, plays) or academic work (narrative, persuasive, and expository essays, as well as research and presentation) through fun games, activities, and writing exercises. Students can now choose between either a full day creative writing program or a full day critical writing.
Our Creative Writing courses focus on developing our students' creativity. We use illustration, free writing, and several other techniques to help students overcome writer's block and write the kind of stories they want to write. Students in Creative Writing will learn about stories, poems, and plays.
Our Critical Writing courses focus on helping students develop their essays. We cover several different kinds of essays including, persuasive, expository, and narrative. We also teach courses on presentation and journalism to help show students the possiblities of nonfiction writing.
A second grade student has the choice to enroll in either the creative writing or critical writing path though we strongly suggest them to be part of the creative writing program as this path harnesses the love or writing in the child. For the older grades, campers can choose between creative and critical writing. The creative writing program is best for those students who either have a passion for producing creative work or for those students who may need to learn how to overcome writer's block and enjoy writing. The critical writing program is the option to choose for those campers who prefer to write essays and works of nonfiction. Students in both programs will spend the afternoon editing and revising creative pieces or essays which were written in the morning session.
A writing lab has been added to this year's creative writing and critical writing programs! Using the feedback that we have received from our students and parents, as well as the Lekha staff's teaching experience over the past several years, we have created a wonderful program this year, one that features full-day writing programs with interactive lectures (creative or critical writing lessons, generating ideas, pre-writing, and drafting) in the morning and lab (reading comprehension, vocabulary building, editing and revision) in the afternoon. This new structure will help students not only to grow creatively but will also develop their critical thinking and language art skills.
NOTE: We have limited vacancies for students interested in registering for the morning session only. (Portfolios will only consist of handwritten drafts.)
